HOWTH HARBOUR DEVELOPMENT & FISHERY CENTRE
This was a major fishing harbour development contract, which completely altered and improved the harbour layout. Construction involved insitu reinforced and precast concrete trawler piers, rubble mound rock armoured breakwaters, yacht marina (within existing harbour confines) and a syncrolift basin.
The Work comprised the following operations:
1. The reclamation of 6 acres of foreshore by means of dredging and pumping ashore 70,000m3 of sand contained within a rock armour revetment.
2. Construction of a temporary bund across part of the harbour using 360 tonnes of Larssen 3 sheet piling and gravel fill. The enclosed area was dewatered, for quay construction in the dry, by means of 4 No. 10" diameter electrical pumps working 24 hours a day over a 20-month period.
3. Construction of a temporary bund, enclosing the area for the Yacht Marina, for the excavation of 66,000m3 of soft material and 40,000m3 of rock in the dry.
4. A further 25,000m3 of soft material and 35,000m3 of rock was removed at the harbour entrance by
underwater blasting and dredging.
5. A new quay wall, 700m long, was constructed part insitu (in the dry) and part in precast units placed underwater by a team of divers.
6. The following breakwaters were constructed using 4-6 tonne rock armour:
(a) Trawler pier breakwater 400m long.
(b) Marina breakwater 200m long.
(c) East and West harbour entrances over a distance of 715m.
In addition to this approximately 20,000m2 or rock revetment was installed.
