MONEYPOINT ENVIRONMENTAL RETROFIT PROJECT

Lurgi Lentjes were employed by the ESB to design and install flue gas cleaning equipment to cut down   emissions from the existing Moneypoint turf fuelled power station to comply with current EU legislation.

Lurgi Lentjes employed Carillion Irishenco Ltd. to undertake all the civil works associated with retrofitting this flue gas cleaning equipment.  The equipment to be fitted essentially consisted of an SCR – Reactor between the boiler and the air preheater which reduces nitrogen oxide, and the installation of other specialised equipment. The civil works involved with this contract consisted of the construction of large reinforced concrete silos for material storage, erection and extension of different supply buildings and support structures.

A central mixing station had to be constructed together with the provision of smaller supply buildings and foundations for the conveyor system. The work had to be carried out during normal plant operations without disrupting the generation of electricity at the power station and with no detrimental impact on remaining existing structure and facilities.  The works had to be carefully co-ordinated with other site activities, which were on going and in parallel with the civil works. Careful planning and co-ordination of all activities was vital to the success of this contract.

The scope of the work also included installation of roads and parking areas, Foul and surface water drainage for all new structures, water supply system and all necessary interfaces between civil works and the various items of mechanical and electrical plant.
