ROSSLARE HARBOUR DEVELOPMENT PHASE C NEW FERRY PIER
This contract comprised the construction of a new pier 152.5 metres long, the foundations and fixings for a Ro-Ro Bridge Ramp, and the construction of a Rubble Revetment Bank along with access works and services from the shore.
The pier construction included two sliced blockwork walls placed by divers, back to back on a rubble foundation in a dredged trench. The precast concrete blocks weighed up to 30 tonnes each and a total of approximately 1,600 were required. The heart of the pier was filled with approximately 10,000m3 of sand. A cast insitu concrete superstructure completed the pier.
A revetment bank of total area 15,000m2 was constructed adjacent to the pier. To form this revetment terram was first laid on preformed slopes followed by 1,100m3 of filter stone and 23,000m3 of rock armour.
A precast concrete yard and batching plant was established on site for the manufacture of the blocks, which were cast in purpose-built steel shutters. These were individually numbered and eventually transferred to their exact, pre-ordained, location in the 152.5 metre long sloping bond type blockwall pier.
