TORY ISLAND HARBOUR PIER & BREAKWATER CONSTRUCTION
The works are located at Tory Island approximately 12KM from the coast of County Donegal. The Contract comprised the placing of pre-cast concrete caissons underwater and in the tidal zone to form the vertical faces of a pier extension. The caisson units were filled with reinforced concrete and the central core of the pier was filled with mass concrete. A reinforced concrete deck and battered wave wall were constructed to complete the pier.
A breakwater was constructed comprising of rock core material, a filter layer, secondary armour and primary armour. The primary armour units consisted of “CORE-LOC” concrete armour of 12 tonne size placed on the trunk and on both roundheads of the pier extension.
The pier extension is in the form of an “L-Shape” comprising of approximately 36M of berthing space to the pier extension, 40M of berthing face to the “L” shaped pier and 15M of return quay face with a protective breakwater at the exposed end.
The pre-cast concrete caisson units and “CORE-LOC” armour units were manufactured on the mainland and transported to the island by a tug and barge. The concrete was batched on site and the concrete materials as well as the filter layer and secondary armour for the breakwater were also transported from the mainland.
